The Drop Shot
Welcome to the January edition of our club newsletter. There has been lots going on in the club this month so let’s jump right in!
The Wednesday Night Box League is now up and running. We have 4 teams with 6 players in each team. Each match consists of 15 games and as it’s a team event, every game won counts towards the overall team figures. As expected, some of the results are very close indeed!
Interest in this event was huge which was very encouraging for the committee and so we hope to run a larger version of this when the weather improves, the dome comes down and we have all 6 courts back in action.
Just a reminder that the adult classes are back up and running. Tennis classes are a great way to improve your game and build confidence on court. Johnny provides great feedback and his doubles drills really highlight how the game should be played. The adult class timetable is on our website www.ciymstennisclub.org so take a look and sign up for a class using Acebook – it really is very easy!!
A quick word about our VI@CI program. Sadly, before Christmas, we lost a valued VI member Brian Lenehan. Brian was an incredible athlete and an amazing and talented tennis player and will be sorely missed by the VI and CI players alike.
Our VI players are currently training hard as they are hoping to be sending a team to the IBTA World Games in Birmingham this year. More information will follow when they know more but, in the meantime, we wish them luck and will support our players as best we can.
Our junior players are heading to the sun in April, lucky them. Johnny is taking a group of young players to Alicante to undertake some warm weather training on clay. This is a fantastic opportunity for our young players and an experience which we hope they will not forget. They will train at a tennis academy now run by Przemek Stec (for those of you who may recognise the name he was a former professional tennis player and coach in Northern Ireland). We look forward to seeing the juniors back on our courts showing us their new honed skills!
Talking of trips abroad, our annual tennis club trip away is now open to all members. We are heading back to Mallorca on 27th September to 1st October. Unlike the juniors trip this is not so much warm weather tennis training but more drinking and eating training with some tennis thrown in for good measure!! Anyone interested should have a chat with Alan Campbell.
Finally, the Internal Handicapped Doubles tournament was a great success with finals day on Saturday 28th. Congratulations to all those who took part and well done to our winners
Rob/David – Mens Doubles
Cynthia/Marion – Ladies Doubles
Anna/Paddy – Mixed Doubles
Check out Tennis Ireland Tournament Software for full details of all matches. Johnny wishes to pass on his thanks to everyone who entered the tournament and he hopes we will have an even bigger entry next year!
What’s coming up next?
